UK Study Connects Social Media Use and Depression

That’s only half the story… In the UK, there has been a significant rise in teen suicides, anxiety, and depression—a crisis intensified by social pressures, academic strain, and, increasingly, the unchecked influence of digital environments. Among these, the normalisation of gambling through pervasive advertising, particularly around sports, has drawn growing concern from health advocates and educators.

In South Africa, similar patterns are emerging as Betway South Africa sports betting and other operators saturate match broadcasts, social media, and even stadium branding. While legal and regulated, this visibility embeds betting into the fabric of fan culture—often without adequate safeguards for younger audiences who see their sporting heroes alongside betting logos. The line between fandom and financial risk blurs, and for vulnerable teens already grappling with mental health challenges, that blur can be dangerous.
